Hands down, better manufacturing. All the industry was in the North. If it wasn't for that the South might have won. Thanks to the North's superior industry, union troops always had more weapons and ammo then the South. Aslo, due to the fact that they produced most of the countries food, the Union soldiers didn't have to march on empty stomachs nearly as often as the Confederate troops. So, when you think about it, the North's army had more guns, ammo, and food then the South's army. That can be very helpful when the war goes on for 4 years. Also the North had the advantage of greater numbers of fighting men. As mentioned earlier, the North had more weapons and ammunition, but when the Confederates won a battle they would retrieve US arms and were fully equipped with the latest in weaponry, the disadvantage they had was not enough men to use them. Added to this, the Union eventually made it illegal for the Confederate states to retain their slaves as property, thus making it difficult to make the former slaves fight for the confederacy, along with freeing members of the Union states from former laws of having to return escaped slaves to their so-called owners. This, along with daily desertions from the Confederate forces depleted their sources of fighting men even further. The South never stood a chance, it was always a war that they would lose. Perhaps another advantage Northerners had was their mindset, they did not have the numbers of slaves and former slaves living among them that people living in the southern states did, so Northerners didn't have the fear of being overrun by, what the Southerners considered, inferior primitive people who were incapable of competency. The North were free of these fears and instead of keeping the slaves subjugated, no longer needing a manual workforce themselves, but also wanting to be rid of the commercial competition from the South's cheap labour force, set about freeing the slaves and at the same time removing the commercial threat that the South posed.
