The South cultivated a Plantation Society. A small handful of wealthy, slave-owning planters, controlled vast tracts of agricultural land and had to provide for the large workforce by making everything that the plantation required on the plantation itself. Plantations had to be mostly self-sufficient with their own blacksmiths, carpenters, and other crafts. The only major machinery was the cotton gin, which allowed the seed to be separated from the fiber quickly and easily, instead of relying on time-consuming separation by hand. A plantation may have had their own grist mill or distillery. The North was largely Industrialized. Most of the population lived in large cities and worked in factories. In the Midwest, the food was grown on small family farms, and the surplus sold to the cities, transported by rail, river, or canal to the population centers.

what were two key differences between the north's economy and the south's economy?
One of the obvious differences between the North and the South during the U.S. Civil War was that the North was anti-slavery and the South was pro-slavery.
Some differences were that the South supported slavery and the North didn't, the South was based on agriculture and the North on industries (like factories), and the South wanted more states' rights while the North supported a federal government.
