The impact of the early New Deal programs was mixed at best. While the gross national product did inch upward between 1933 and 1935, about ten million Americans remained out of work. Public support for Roosevelt remained strong, however. The 1934 congressional elections broke tradition and resulted in the Democrats actually increasing their numbers in the House and the Senate. The period after the midterm elections, often called the Second New Deal, had a stronger focus on social reform. It was also the time that the president's policies faced challenges from the left and the right, as well as from the Supreme Court.

Roosevelt's economic policies at the beginning of his second term revealed his desire to rein in the rampant New Deal policies of his first term. His second term was much less frenetic in activity.
The New Deal was first put in to effect in 1933. The New Deal started many programs in the states to help them recover from the Great Depression.
They opposed the New Deal because of the huge costs that were needed for the New Deal, the tax payers had to pay a lot more, and the disappearance of Laissez Faire.

Critics of the first New Deal favored the Second New Deal because the policies were made to give more long term reform programs to the recovering nations. There were some critics of the Second New Deal who felt this was a step toward Socialism.
The agencies and laws created in the first New Deal accounted for nearly every sector of society. The second New Deal dealt with some of the class conflict in society at that time.

I think that the Second New Deal is better than the first because the first one was like a trial and did not have sound footing the second new deal was on sound footing and was able to do more because people liked it. (just what I think)

Examples of the Second New Deal included the WPA, which was the major relief agency of the New Deal. It was to provide work, not welfare. The major new piece of legislation during the Second New Deal was the Social Security Act of 1935. It provided insurance for the aged, unemployed, and disabled and it was based on contributions by both employers and employees.
