Political representation differed in the colonies when compared to England. The colonists did not have any representation. The English citizens did.
The leaders of the American Revolution did not approve of the idea of political parties, but it seems they were inevitable. Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were the founders and leaders of the first two political parties in the United States.
Loyalists support the leaders, patriots defend their country. During the American Revolution Loyalists supported the rule of the English King while Patriots wanted a new government for the colonies (they were not states yet).
