Most settlers that traveled to the new world came because of overpopulation, health issues (plagues, potato famine, etc), and very commonly due to religious persecution.

What did the English seek in New England?

England wanted to go to the new world originally for three main reasons. These three reasons mainly dealt with Economics, Politics, and Social Motives. England wanted to go to the new world economically for raw materials, mercantile trading, and land. The new world hadn't been harvested for many of the raw materials and luxuries that they knew of. These luxuries would make trading in England flourish and spread throughout other countries. Since England was a heavy manufacturing area, they had many surplus inorganic products. These products could be used in building a new territory in the new world. When it comes to politics, England mainly wanted to come to the new world to weaken Spain. Colonization in the new world would mean that England could establish a new naval base to counter Spain. Another political reason could also be that they wanted an area for different religious freedoms, but that also takes us in England's social motives for traveling to the new world. So, England of course wanted to travel to the new world for social reasons. Some of the social reasons that they had in mind were very basic, but still held great importance. Like I went over earlier, some English men wanted to come to the new world for religious freedom, such as Lord Baltimore, who founded Maryland as a safe haven for English Catholics. England also saw that there was much fertile ground in the new world, which could be used to their agricultural advantage. They could also used the new crops to raise more livestock, such as sheep. With both of those important social reasons, there are also the more basic ones, like the English's desire for adventure and exploration.
