According to the Gregorian calendar currently in use, George Washington's dates were February 22, 1732-December 14, 1799. The first U.S. President was born, however, while the Julian calendar was still being used by Britain and her colonies. Also, prior to 1752, there were two different ways of counting New Year's, one beginning January 1, the other March 25 (for the Feast of Annunciation). To avoid confusion dates from January 1 through March 24 might combine the years.
Thus records before 1752 gave Washington's birth date as February 11, 1731/2. The Julian calendar was inefficient, and by the 1750s its numbering was 11 days behind where it should have been. The Gregorian calendar corrected that lag time.
