On July 25, 1805 William Clark reached the Three Forks and immediately moved on, some 25 mroe miles, up the westernmost of the forks, what they would name a few days later the Jefferson River. Lewis was two days behind him and on the 26th Clark went another 12 miles up the Jefferson, then turned back to the Three Forks to explore the middle fork, which they named the Madison River, after James Madison, then Secretary of State. On the 27th, he returned to the Three Forks at 3:00 pm and Lewis had arrived at 9:00 am.
