In late 1819, about 15 months after his mother Nancy died, his father Thomas, married a widow named Sarah Bush Johnson. She had 3 children of her own, Elizabeth, Matilda, and John D; along with Lincoln and his sister Sarah (nick named "Sally"), the new family lived on Thomas' farm in Indiana. Sarah was a very loving mom and stepmother, she and Lincoln had a very warm and close relationship. When Thomas and Sarah married, Abraham and his sister Sarah, were able to attend school, at least for brief periods during 1820-1822, and was said to have influenced Lincoln in his studies, even while he wasn't able to attend school.
In 1826, Lincoln's sister Sarah left home to marry Aaron Grigsby; the new couple lived in Pigeon Creek, Indiana, as well, about 2 miles away from the Lincoln family. The union was brief; in January 1828, Sarah died while in labor and the baby was sadly stillborn. Lincoln was devastated at the news of his sister's death, as the two were very close.
Several months after his sister's death, Lincoln took his first paying job, taking a flatboat, containing farm produce to New Orleans. During the trip, he fought off a robbery attempt, and witnessed a slave auction. He returned home and worked on a farm, belonging to his father's neighbor. Lincoln was not paid for the work because he was working for the neighbor in exchange for payment of a loan or loans, his father had incurred to the neighbor.
In 1830, his father moved the family to Cole County, near Decatur, Illinois.
The following year, 1831, Lincoln took another flatboat trip to New Orleans, and his father moves again, purchasing another farm in Cole County. When Lincoln returned from New Orleans, he moved out on his own to New Salem, Illinois. Lincoln had many jobs, as a young man but New Salem was the place he began his life in politics.

Lincoln's mother died when he was nine. I can not imagine that her death had any direct influence on his decision to run for President. He ran because he had made a campaign for the Senate which attracted national attention because of his debates with his opponent Stephan Douglas. BY participating in these debates and he perhaps accidentally laid the groundwork for a presidential campaign.
