New York City was the first capital of the United States once the Constitution was ratified. In 1790 Philadelphia was chosen as a temporary capital for ten years (until December 1800), until the nation's capital in Washington, D.C., would be ready. In 1800, the seat of government for the United States was finally moved to Washington D.C.
