The colonies separated with England after the French and Indian war, mostly because of taxation. That is where we get "No Taxation without Representation." But, a rough estimate is that, one third wanted independence, one third wanted to stay with England, and one third wanted to stay out of it entirely.

Also because the English did not help them for a long time, and all of a sudden came asking for taxes.
