The first actual "copier" was manufactured in 1939 by Chester Carlson - inventer of the "dry toner" process (static latent image transfer process). He sold his patent to Haloid/Xerox who manufactured the first automated copier in 1960. That is how we came to know the copy process as Xerography and why most folks call copies "xeroxes".
