Rubber bands became commonly used in the United States in the late 19th century, with their popularity rising significantly after the introduction of mass production techniques. They were patented in 1845 by Stephen Perry, but it wasn't until the 1860s and 1870s that they became widely available and used for various purposes, such as bundling papers and organizing items. By the early 20th century, rubber bands had become a staple office supply.
United States Rubber Company was created in 1892.
