A couple of reasons. Farm work, and help around the house, for one. Kids could earn money and the more kids, the more work. Besides, there was no birth control in colonil times, and the winter nights were long and cold.

Kids in colonial times did not ice skate like people do now a days. Kids did play on the ice but they just slid around on their shoes.
