What you're seeing isn't an E and isn't a mint mark. It's an "F" which is the initial of the coin's designer James Earle Fraser. The mint mark, if there is one, would be on the back under the words FIVE CENTS. Please check your coin again and post a new question. Buffalo nickels were minted from 1913 to 1938. Any 1940 nickel would carry the familiar Jefferson design. Also, there has never been a "B" mint mark on any US coin.
