The American Federation of Labor used a 'closed shop' trade agreement that literally make it mandatory for workers to join the union. The union also was able to use boycotts and strikes to its advantage, because of a substantial material reserve that could see its members through a work stoppage.
I had always assumed the term GAS was an expansion on Alec Wilder's 1972 book "American Popular Song" which unexpectedly sold very well. Wikiepiedia oesn't identify it as the source of the term (it gives no source) but does give a lot of mention to Wilder's definitive book on the subject. The Net has many sites that discuss the GAS but don't think any provide a source for the term. Most of them equate the term to what is also known as "standards."

The electric field strength decreases with increasing distance from the source of the field. This relationship follows an inverse square law, meaning that the field strength is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source. In other words, as the distance from the source doubles, the electric field strength decreases by a factor of four.

Samson, a figure from the Bible, lied when asked to reveal the source of his great strength by Delilah. He eventually told her that his strength came from his uncut hair, leading to his downfall when she betrayed him.
The loss of a signal's strength as it travels away from its source is known as attenuation. Attenuation can be caused by factors such as distance, obstacles, interference, and the medium through which the signal is traveling. As a signal travels further from its source, it experiences a decrease in power and may become weaker or distorted.
The strength of an electric field increases as you get closer to it. This is because the electric field lines are more concentrated closer to the source of the field. The strength of an electric field is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source.
Radiation strength refers to the amount of energy emitted by a radiation source per unit of time. It is a measure of the intensity or power of the radiation being emitted. The strength of radiation can vary depending on the type of radiation source and the distance from the source.
The magnetic field strength decreases with distance from the source, following an inverse-square law. This means that as you move farther away from the source of the magnetic field, the strength of the field diminishes rapidly. Conversely, getting closer to the source will increase the magnetic field strength.
