they should support men
Florida was a Confederate state during the Civil War. About 14,000 men from Florida joined the Confederate Army in 11 regiments of infantry and 2 regiments of cavalry. About 2,000 Floridians joined the Union Army. Florida presented a real problem to the Union Navy because of its long coastline. The major port cities were all blockaded or occupied, but it was not possible to control shipments out of every inlet and bay. Florida shipped salt, beef, and a variety of other goods to Confederate forces. Over 5,000 Florida men died in the Confederate Army. Some Floridians refused to serve the military of either side, even after the Confederate States issued a draft order requiring all men age 18 and up to join. A large number of draft-age men hid out in Indian villages or swamps. The largest battle in Florida was the Battle of Olustee in 1864. It was a Confederate victory. In less than four weeks, Confederate cavalry raider Colonel John H. Hunt, was at large in Kentucky having raided three towns, causing Union confusion, and recruiting Kentuckians to the Southern cause. He arrived back in Tennessee on July 22, 1862. In his raids he lost 90 men but gained several hundred new men to fill their places. Tennessee would prove to be a key Confederate state throughout the war.
