Parties in 1796 were not like they are today. In 1796 there were two important federal officials, Adams and Jefferson and they had sharply different views of the role of federal government They were the two obvious candidates for president in 1796. Rather than the parties picking the candidates, it was more a matter of influential people deciding which of these candidates they wanted to support. The parties grew up around the candidates. Adams won in 1796, but the same candidates ran again in 1800. The Jefferson supporters became known as Democratic Republicans and the Adams people as Federalist.
