The Lewis and Clark Expedition took place from May 1804 to September 1806 and was the first American exploration of the Pacific Northwest. The expedition wasn't considered particularly significant to the public until centennial events in 1904 and 1905 publicized it.

Lewis and Clark primarily explored the Missouri River during their expedition from 1804 to 1806. They traveled up the river as they journeyed westward, mapping the territory and seeking a route to the Pacific Ocean. The expedition also included exploration of the Columbia River in the later stages as they reached the Pacific Northwest.
