What were the advantages that the union had at the beginning of the war to those of the confederacy?

At the beginning of the Civil War, railroads connected most of the union. They did not connect much of the Confederacy. The Union had more foundries and factories. The Union had far more farmland. The Union had more people. The war would occur in areas controlled by the Confederacy. Both sides saw this as an advantage at first. The Confederacy did not need to change anything. Union factories could change from civilian manufacture to making war materiel. Winchester in Connecticut could switch from making sewing machines to manufacturing rifles. The main advantage was potential rather than actual. While railroad tracks ran all over the Union States, they did not use a standard gage. To manufacture guns at in New England and ship them to illinois, the railroad cars needed to be unloaded or have the wheels replaced. Then they could go on. The union would establish standard gage railroad track so freight could be loaded anywhere and sent anywhere else. That took time. The Union had the Navy. Slowly it took port cities out of the picture. Thus, the Union had the ability to grind slowly away at the Confederacy.

Which side the union or the confederacy had greater financial resources?

Clearly the industrialized Union combined with its safe farmlands had the financial advantage over the Confederacy. In fact the Union went on a crash warship building campaign as it had the resources. Soon enough the Union was able to build a war fleet greater than that of Great Britain. With most of its major ports blockaded, the South had a difficult time of receiving products it needed and the Union blockade suppressed the cash the South could garner from cotton sales abroad. The Union had much more manpower and much more possible revenue than did the South.

Why did the Union states raise a much larger army than the Confederate states during the US Civil War?

The Union's huge population allowed it to recruit and draft many more soldiers than the Confederacy. During the course of the US Civil War, approximately two million soldiers served in the Union military. As an example of this advantage, President Lincoln, in early 1864, called upon the Northern governors to raise 500,000 more recruits to the Union army.

How was the Confederacy better than the Union?

Maybe southern troops were, in general, willing to endure more hardships or fight a little harder because they felt they had more personally at stake than most northern troops. The southern army certainly had generally much better battlefield leadership. The southern troops themselves had a lot of respect for Yankees from the midwestern states, who tended to be farm boys just like them, and equally hard to handle.

What was one reason that Abraham Lincoln wanted to keep the border states in the Union?

The Emancipation Proclamation was as much a political act as a humanitarian one. It only gave freedom to slaves in states that had already joined the Confederacy. Lincoln hoped that these newly freed slaves would join the Union Army. However, he didn't want to lose support from border states that were both pro-slavery and pro-Union. Lincoln allowed them to keep slaves to prevent more states from joining the Confederacy.
