The first known European exploration of what is now the United States was conducted by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León in 1513. He is credited with being the first European to set foot on the mainland of North America, landing in present-day Florida while searching for the Fountain of Youth. Other early explorers included Hernando de Soto and Francisco Coronado, who ventured further into the interior of the continent in the following decades.
