Back in the way back days, slaves did.
HMMM! I was not a slave & I picked cotton on a Mississippi plantation!
Cotton had to be picked by hand and the invention of the cotton gin allowed for more cotton to be processed. Cotton is a versatile material and can be used by many industries especially textile and clothes.
The amount of cotton picked by a female slave varied significantly based on factors such as the individual's strength, skill, and the specific conditions of the plantation. On average, a female slave could pick between 150 to 200 pounds of cotton per day. Some exceptionally strong workers could pick even more, while others may have picked less. The labor was grueling and often required long hours in harsh conditions.

Who was the plantation owner
Cotton is currently picked by machine. They used to have slaves pick the cotton in the south by hand. You seem to have forgotton the people (both white & black) that picked cotton after the slaves & before the cotton picking machines.
they usually picked cotton, picked corn, planted seeds that their slave master wanted them to plant and if they didn't do this they would get punished. also, they cooked, cleaned and did just about any job the slave masters could think of.
