Juan Ponce de León was sent on his expedition by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile of Spain. They financed his journey in search of new territories and the legendary Fountain of Youth. The expedition took place in 1513, marking the first known European exploration of Florida.
General Francisco Franco, who was a fascist dictator was head of the government, but also declared himself 'regent' ruling on behalf of the King who was not permitted to take the throne. When Franco died, he declared in his will that the monarchy should be restored, which duly happened in 1975 with King Juan Carlos I taking the crown. The King of Spain went about introducing democracy and a constitution and elections were enacted in 1978.
