Frederick Douglas was married twice. His first wife was an African American woman named Anna Murray. They were married while he was still being held in slavery. They had 5 children together, 4 of which lived to be adults. One of their daughters, Annie, died when she was 10. When Anna Murray died, he married a white woman named Helen Pitts.
