Champagne Charley Townshend was the chief cabinet member of king George the third of England 1766-1767. He came up with the infamous Townshend Revenue Acts which placed tarrifs on lead, glass, paint, paper, and tea imported into the American colonies. This was different from earlier british attempts at taxing the colonies because it was import taxes not intercolonial taxes, but it did not work. The colonists were more angry than before. This helped lead to the American revolution. Amanda if you are reading this for your APUSH extra credit this is Ben and you owe me big time.
the townshend act was a tax on glass, lead, paper, and tea.
The acts were written and passed by Parliament, and named for Charles Townshend (1725-1767), the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who proposed the program. Townshend, a witty speaker who died suddenly shortly after the Acts were passed, was known by some as "Champagne Charlie" for a speech made in the House of Commons earlier in 1767.
