The gold found in the Dakotas was in the Black Hills, an area sacred to the Lakota,Cheyenne, and Kiowa. Previous treaties, such as Ft. Laramie in 1868, guaranteed theBlack Hills to the natives against encroachments by the whites. The incursion by the U.S. Army, who did the initial survey that started the rush to the area, was an unofficial violation of those treaties. They were supposed to be surveying a route for a rail line, the men started prospecting on their own time, found some gold, and word leaked out. Oddly coincidental, there was a major recession going on at the time, and suddenly, there's a new gold strike in the west.
While he was a scientist, Benjamin Banneker was not an inventor. He did help survey for the site of Washington, D.C. He was also a mathematician and an astronomer, known for his almanacs. In these almanacs, he published information about literature, medicine, tides, bees, and locust.
