William Grant Still was the first to actually do it. The first I know of that held notable positions were Henry Lewis, director of the New Jersey Symphony for some time, and Paul Freeman, who was Associate Conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in the early 1970's, and today conducts the Czech Philharmonic. I'm sure there are other examples, too.

On March 6, 1775, an African American named Prince Hall was made a Master Mason in Irish Constitution Military Lodge No. 441, along with fourteen other African Americans: Cyrus Johnston, Bueston Slinger, Prince Rees, John Canton, Peter Freeman, Benjamin Tiler, Duff Ruform, Thomas Santerson, Prince Rayden, Cato Speain, Boston Smith, Peter Best, Forten Horward, and Richard Titley, all of whom apparently were free by birth. When the Military Lodge left the area, the African Americans were given the authority to meet as a Lodge, form Processions on the days of the Saints John, and conduct Masonic funerals, but not to confer degrees nor to do other Masonic work. These individuals applied for and obtained a Warrant for Charter from the Grand Lodge of England in 1784 and formed African Lodge #459. Although the band "performed" with an orchestra on Days of Future Passed (in actual fact the rock and orchestral segments were recorded separately), they relkied on the Mellotron when on the road to promote their work. The first time they toured using an orchestra was after 1992's A Night at Red Rocks (with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra conducted by Larry Baird). They tended to use local orchestras to the venue (but still using Baird to conduct) to reduce transport costs, although in the last couple of years of their lorchestral tours, they used a hybrid orchestra that was called The World Festival Orchestra.
