Probably the richest South Carolinian in Ante-Bellum South Carolina was John C Calhoun, who not only owned vast plantations in western South Carolina (Clemson University sits upon one of his plantations) but also extensive lands and even gold mines in neighboring Georgia. However Calhoun died a decade before the Civil War began. The richest South Carolinian when the War began in 1861 was probably Wade Hampton, who equipped an entire legion from his own pocket and made many contributions during the contest along with being a celebrated commander of cavalry. His reputation was so great in the state that he led forces against reconstruction and became the first post Reconstruction Governor of the State of South Carolina.

Wade Hampton of South Carolina was considered to be the richest man in the south. His family had pioneered a plantation in the upstate of South Carolina and Wade, as heir, had reached that status before buying additional land to establishing a cotton plantation in Mississippi. To start that plantation he sent between one and two hundred slaves from his South Carolina holdings. Less than one per cent of slaveowners owned more than 200 slaves, but they owned over half of the total of slaves. There were a few "prominent" families in each southern state which had over several generations acquired large land holdings and a large slave labor work force. As rich people have in every time and place, they exerted disproportionate political power, because, after all, money talks.

Oh, dude, South Carolina is like, totally chill with its coastal plains, sandy beaches, and swamps. It's got some cool rivers and lakes too, like the Santee and the Marion. And let's not forget about those sweet mountains in the northwest. So yeah, South Carolina's got a little bit of everything, man.
