William Almon Wheeler began 1881 as the VP and served until Chester Alan Arthur

was sworn in on March 4. Chester Arthur remained in that office until September 19 when President Garfield died and Arthur became president. There was no vice-president after Arthur became president. In those days a vacancy in the vice-presidency was not filled until the next presidential election.
