There was a greater need for plantation workers in the South, so the majority of the slaves were there working.
The South had the big plantations which needed a huge work force. The North had factories which didn't need quite as much unskilled labor.
The voyage to North America by John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto or Zuan Chabotto) in 1497 established some British claim to the New World. Of his voyage in 1499, little is known and some records indicate that he never returned.
According to historians, the major groups of immigrants that came to Britainâ??s American colonies in the 1700s included the Africans who made up 47% of the immigrant population followed by the Scottish and Scot-Irish. There was also a large number of Germans who migrated as well.

By the 1700s the major powers in North America were the British, though the French had a substantial amount of power as well. France owned the Louisiana territory which was a major port town.
