Never the less, Arnold never expected to win the battle. He only hoped to delay the British navy there until proper defenses of West Point could be prepared. Arnold also hoped to keep the British navy from sailing up the Hudson River until winter set in and the British could not sail up the river. His delaying action succeeded in stopping the British, even though he lost the battle itself.
