Dimes minted from mid-1916 to the end of 1945 all carry a picture of Miss Liberty.

The coin's designer chose to depict her wearing a winged "Liberty cap" (the wings signify freedom) that strongly resembled the winged cap worn by the Roman god Mercury. The coins very quickly were nicknamed "Mercury dimes" and the name has stuck ever since.
