Why Jamestown a poor place for settlement?

While the prior planning was somewhat lacking, the settlement at Jamestown got off to a fairly good start. The first winter was extremely harsh and unexpected. That winter caused condition continued hardship.

Jamestown is built on swampy land and it had a poor water supply. Mosquitoes were very bad so the combination of bad water killed most of the 106 men within six months. The lack of food was also a problem.
