The colonies wanted to be independent because the indigenous people felt that they were entitled to their own land. There was constant unrest because of repatriation of valuable resources that were serving the colonialists instead of the locals.

Everybody has to be self reliant, whether today or 300 years ago. The difference between then and now is there were no well fare checks coming from the King George to help the colonists in their troubles. The colonists instead sent King George well fare checks in the form of taxation. As self reliant as they may have been, the colonists did rely on England for military support and the sort of things people rely on governments for.

By the mid 1700s how strong was british rule in the colonies?

By the mid-1700s, the relationship between Britain and the colonies had become, in fact if not in form, federal. This meant that the central governement in London was responsible for colonial defense and for foreign affairs. It also provided a uniform system of money and credit and a common market for colonial trade. Beyond that, the colonies were allowed a fairly wide amount of self-rule. It wasn't until the end of the French and Indian war (1760s) that Britain began to become more involved and heavily tax its colonies to pay for the efforts in the war.

Reasons why the American colonies went to war in the 1770s?

England had taxed the colonies unfairly, and they did not want the British soldiers, or redcoats, in their cities. Also, England did not let the settlers settle west of the Appalachian Mountains, so they were enraged. The Boston Massacre, where the redcoats killed several Americans, fed the colonists' anger as well.
