people who founded the Middle Colonies were looking to practice their own religion (Pennsylvania mainly) or to make money. Many of these people didn't bring their families with them from England and were the perfect workers for the hard work required in ironworks and shipyards.

The "main" reason the British established the 13 colonies was for financial opportunity. They wanted to take over New France and control the fur trade. Other reasons the colonies were found: to avoid religious persecution and for profits.
The slaves were not needed because the climate was too cold and the Africans worked better in the heat and there were more things to do for the slaves.
