The War Between the States, or The War of Northern Aggression, had the same situation that you have in most wars. Both sides were Patriots - just with different ideals. But history is written by the victors. Since slaves thought they would be free if the North won, they supported the North.

President Lincoln issued the 'Emancipation Proclamation' during the war, but it was only over areas that were in the south, areas that he had no control over. It was mainly a clever foreign policy move to keep the English and French from helping the south.
