They wanted to escape their condition of slavery. The better word would be that they needed to escape. Try to imagine what they went through every day. They didn't even own their clothing or shoes. Their family could be broken up at the whim of their owner. The women couldn't say 'no' to their owners sexual demands. They had a better chance of getting away by using the help that the Underground Railroad gave them.

What was the Underground Railroad?

The underground railroad was an informal network of people who, although in violation of the "Fugitive Slave Act" helped escaped slaves reach freedom in Northern States or Canada. The underground railroad wasn't actually a railroad nor was it underground. It was actually a system where slaves would go from house to house until they could escape to freedom. The underground railroad was an escape route for slaves to travel from safe house to safe house and head to the north. It was an 'underground' organization. That is, it was not publicized, and kept secret from authorities at the time. It was called a railroad, because the way it was organized was akin to the way railroads were run. With various stops along the way (Safe houses) and conductors leading them (Often born-free blacks).Harriet Tubman was a major figure in the history of the underground railroad. The Underground Railroad was used to help slaves in the U.S. escape to states that were free.

How could slaves get out of slavery?

I know of one way but it wasn't always guaranteed. They could go on the Underground Railroad. Harriet Tubman is the founder of this. It was not a real "underground" railroad. It was a covered carriage and the slaves would hide under all the crops and things under the cover in the back. Some of them made it out and some could get caught. But that is one way they could get out of slavery.

How did slaves travel in the Underground Railroad?

The underground railroad wasn't really a "railroad". It had a deeper meaning. The "underground railroad" was the hope that slaves may one day escape and the actions of those who helped slaves escape into freedom. People from the southern states that sympathized with the slaves helped them escape moving north. Slaves were not safe even in states that outlawed slavery because of the Fugitive Slave Act.
