Simple question, unfortunately, there is not a simple answer. People of the Southern states felt that their interests were not being fairly represented in the US government, and they wanted to withdraw (secede) from the US government. They ordered that the US withdraw all military forces in their states. When the US failed to remove the soldiers at Ft. Sumpter, SC, the Confederate govt ordered their forces to attack the US forces at the fort. The US government responded by sending military forces south to fight the Confederate forces, and the war was on.
