In My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglass why does Douglass refuse to name the boys who helped him learn to read?

In "My Bondage and My Freedom," Frederick Douglass refrains from naming the boys who helped him learn to read to protect their identities and avoid potential repercussions. He recognizes that their assistance was a significant act of kindness in a society that enforced strict racial boundaries and could lead to punishment for them. Douglass emphasizes that their help was crucial to his intellectual development and emancipation, but he prioritizes their safety over personal acknowledgment.

How would the typical colonial new england family be described?

The New England family was dominated by the father and they consisted of several children. Women had few rights. They were mainly subsistance farmers only growing enough food for the family. Everyone in the family worked to help with the farm. Children as young as 2 years old would help feed the chickens, gather eggs, or help around the house. The older children helped with the animals and the crops. The girls would mainly help their mother with the common chores of a colonial home. Making candles, churing butter, spinning wool, sewing/mending, milking the cow, carry in the water, baking bread, fixing the meals, cleaning the house, washing clothing. While the boys helped with the crops, cut wood, take care of the animals, and other things dealing with the farm. The church they attended was Puritan and they were expected to read the bible everyday. The bible was often used as part of the education for the children. Most girls were married by 16 years old and had many children. Many died in childbirth and the men/boys would remarry many times.
