The Pequot War of 1637 is considered pivotal in Pequot cultural history because it marked a significant turning point in their existence, leading to the near destruction of the Pequot tribe and a profound transformation of their cultural landscape. The war resulted in the loss of land, lives, and sovereignty, effectively breaking the power of the Pequot and reshaping the dynamics of colonial relationships with Native Americans. The aftermath fostered a legacy of trauma and resilience, influencing Pequot identity and their struggles for recognition and rights in the centuries that followed.
The treaty that the British forced the Pequot to sign was known as the Treaty of Hartford, signed in 1638. This treaty took place in Hartford, Connecticut, following the Pequot War. It effectively dissolved the Pequot tribe as a political entity and redistributed their land to the English settlers and their allies.
