Who was the only president married in the whitehouse?

James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States of America, was the only confirmed bachelor who never married. Buchanan served as president from 1857-1861 and was the last president to be born in the 18th century. Although Buchanan was single, he was engaged to Ann Caroline Coleman in 1819. Coleman was the daughter of a wealthy iron manufacturing businessman; however, the engagement ended after rumors that he was marrying her just for her money, or that he was involved with other women. Coleman listened to the rumors and broke off the engagement. Interesting to note, although never confirmed, it was also speculated that James Buchanan was a homosexual and that he may have had a "relationship" with his close friend, Alabama Sen. William Rufus King...then again, that was never confirmed as truth. Although Buchanan never married, his acting first lady was a woman named Harriet Lane, who was his niece who was orphaned, and of whom Buchanan later adopted.
