You would not think so intuitively, but history is a moving target. The seemingly simple task of getting the basic facts straight is difficult enough, but then there are vastly different and justifiable beliefs about what constitutes the basic facts. What is included, and what is left out, and is there an agenda behind what an individual chooses as relevant? Then there is the matter of interpreting those facts, and interpretations can be vastly different depending on the points of view of the people offering the interpretations. There are difficulties and challenges here to make the strongest men and women weep. The task is to be as thorough and accurate as possible, and to present your narrative of the past in as objective and dispassionate a way as possible. The truth, with as little agenda driven drama as possible, is what tends to sway thinking people. And reading well written history tends to make all people think.

For example, a historian wants to write about Marxist interpretations of World War II. In such a publication the historian must say whether he/she is a Marxist or not.
