The Little Rock Nine were the first African Americans to go to an all-white school. They were among the first to participate in the newly integrated schools of the 50s after Brown vs. Board of Education. People spat on them, yelled racial slurs at them, there were threats of violence and murder, and Melba Patillo Beals even had acid thrown in her eyes. Many were suspended for days or the whole year for standing up for themselves, proving that even the school's administration would have done anything to keep the Nine at bay.
To this day, the Little Rock Nine are remembered as the pioneers of African American equality in the United States. They were all invited to President Barrack Obama's Inaugural Ceremony, and Marquette University recently awarded them the Père Marquette Discovery Award, a prestigious award previously awarded only to the Apollo 11 Astronauts, Mother Teresa, and very few others.
