The South was an agriculturally-based economy, which was more labor-intensive than the North's manufacturing-based economy.

--ESLcity Answer--

Early in American Colonial period Slavery of Africans became prevalent in both the North and the South at around the same time..

Northern slavery grew out of the paradox that in the new world so much land was available, so cheaply, that no one was willing to come to America and sign on to work as a laborer.

So your question may be best writing why was slavery in decline in the North.... And I don't totally agree with the first person's answer since clearly anyone that says manufacturing is not labor-intensive most likely never worked in a factory... However, it is the standard answer...

So my answer will be a little different from the standard school based history textbook: As more and more European Immigrates came to America their were not the same chances as there once was for getting cheap land or becoming independently wealthy by trade or crafts. So the new European immigrates needed to work in these factories and they could not compete with slaves since slave wages was basically free minus the cost of housing, feeding and medical care. So in order to protect white interest slavery was slowly and systematically done away with in the North.

Remember, most industries in America sold their products in America so there has to be a working class making money in order for you to sale your goods..

The North failed to develop large-scale agrarian slavery, such as later arose in the Deep South, but that had little to do with morality and much to do with climate and economy.
