The Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, was fought during the French intervention in Mexico, primarily as a result of France's attempt to establish a monarchy under Maximilian I. Mexican forces, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, faced a well-equipped French army seeking to capture the city of Puebla as a strategic point to advance toward Mexico City. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Mexican troops achieved a surprising victory, which bolstered national pride and resistance against foreign intervention. This victory is commemorated annually in Mexico as Cinco de Mayo.

On May 1, 1862, the Union Army under Gen. Benjamin Butler entered New Orleans, starting a strong military occupation of the city.
On April, 25th 1862, Admiral Farragut take virtual possession of New Orleans, but it was actually seized by the Union troops on May 1st, 1862, when General Butler's units entered the city.
On May 3, 1862, Confederate forces evacuate Yorktown before Union troops overwhelm them. They have delayed McClellan's advance to Richmond by one month. On May 4, Union troops enter the vacated town.
The city of New Orleans was the largest city in the deep South. It commanded the entrance to the Mississippi River. Union Admiral Farragut was given the assignment of capturing this city inasmuch as controlling the mouth of the Mississippi River would enable the North to close this important Southern city from both importing and exporting Confederate trade and prevent the city to be a naval base for the South. In May 1862, Union troops and warships controlled New Orleans.
David Glasgow Farragut. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, but he had been in the US Navy for a great many years and did not go south when the war started. He and another Union naval commander forced the surrender of New Orleans in 1862. He receives the credit for shutting down Mobile, Alabama in August, 1864.

The Union campaigns against Vicksburg were four: The first lasted from May 18th to May 26th 1862. The second lasted from November to December 20, 1862. The third lasted from February to March 1863. The fourth, which saw the fall of Vicksburg in the Union's hand, lasted from May 4 to July 4, 1863.
