On May 1, 1862, the Union Army under Gen. Benjamin Butler entered New Orleans, starting a strong military occupation of the city.
On April, 25th 1862, Admiral Farragut take virtual possession of New Orleans, but it was actually seized by the Union troops on May 1st, 1862, when General Butler's units entered the city.

Union Admiral Farragut was given the assignment of capturing this city inasmuch as controlling the mouth of the Mississippi River would enable the North to close this important Southern city from both importing and exporting Confederate trade and prevent the city to be a naval base for the South. In May 1862, Union troops and warships controlled New Orleans.
