Colonial homes didn't have a kitchen per sae. There was a main room in the average colonial home that had a fireplace that provided heat and was where cooking took place. Many plantation houses had a "kitchen " area that was separated from the main house. This was done because it would catch fire and having it apart would save the main house. All of them cooked over/in the fireplace.
