It made it easier to drop everything and move west to begin a harsh life as a prospector.Getting to the remote area to dig for gold was both expensive and a physical feat, Once there, living conditions were difficult to impossible. A few women made the trek, but by and large young men were entranced by the possibilities of making a lot of money and returning home to marry and build a family.

Families don't look for gold. Children have to be fed and live in places that have more than a tent.
