They sought for domination not to keep the peace. In this domination they didn't care how people die, or how they died.

As weapon technology had improved from muskets to rifled weapons the accuracy of firearms had increased, however the tactics that were being used during the American Civil War had not evolved with the weaponry. So while the weapons improved and became more deadly, military leaders during the majority of the war failed to adapt military battle tactics to the weaponry, which led to numerous causalities during the war.

* if you are referring to why so many Americans were killed during the civil war, the obvious reason would be that both sides of the conflict were Americans.
