Because many Europeans considered Greece 'the cradle of 'Western civilization' and felt a moral obligation to help the people that had given them their culture and democracy. Also the fact that this "western" country was subjected to the Muslim rule of the Ottoman Empire played a part.

The US did not play any significant part in supporting the Greek revolution that started around 1820. It was the English, French and Russians that helped Greece to finally defeat the Ottoman forces.

In the 1820's European powers more than likely supported the Greeks due to the fact that the countries that did the supporting (Britain, France and Russia) countries had all gained there independence through revolutionaries and the hard work of there unyielding beliefs.
