Umm I disagree Most fish i have observed had no trouble regrowing fins when damaged or taken off completely. In good conditions they shouldn't have this problem but if it's a disease or environmental problem then it won't grow back until conditions are repaired and the other fins may fall victim to the same fate. Occasionally the fin won't grow back for unknown reasons but generally the fish usually do okay with a missing fin as long as it's in a goldfish only tank. Check for fin rot and keep that tank as clean as possible for a while to give the best chance at regrowth.

My cat's tail was completely limp 4 weeks ago. I was told by many that it would probably have to be amputated. The cat was unhappy for the first week or two and did not like her tail being touched. She hid under a chair most of the time but wasn't completely antisocial. I didn't put a cast on it but did administer an antibiotic, Baytril 22.7, once a day. About a week ago it began to perk back up. You could now see the kink, could have been from a bite or door or car, who knows, but as of today it's looking so much better and becoming more straight as each day passes. Not sure if the kink will go away completely but I am so glad I stuck to my guns and had faith. A broken tail is obviously going to heal slowly and there is nothing you can do but be patient and wait. I read that it could take up to 6 months for the nerves to heal completely. When in doubt wait it out!

There is a possibility that your filter is on too high. Your goldfish could have been sucked up the spout of the filter and when he/she struggled to get away broke off part of its tail in the process. There are products that help with the growth of fins, otherwise I would just keep and eye on the goldfish so that if any infections or unwanted bacteria attacks the fish you can get him/her the medication needed to treat it.

It depends upon the nature of the break- if it is just the frondy, fin section of the tail that has been damaged then you don't need to do anything as it will grow back naturally. However, if the break is higher up the fish's body and extends to the tail end of it's backbone, then it's best to consult your local vet or aquatics stockist (or, if you have access to one, a marine biologist). They may conclude that the fish can live quite happily with the break and advise that it just be left, or that it would be kinder to put the fish to sleep, which is most humanely done by putting it in a plastic box of full of water and placing this in your freezer, which will send the fish to sleep painlessly.

It is very difficult to operate on a marine animal as small as a goldfish, as they cannot be anaesthetised.
