up to 1992 models, you remove the heater box from inside the cab,
uncouple the hoses at the firewall (under the hood)
and wiggle it out (from the cab).

To change the heater core in a 87 ford f150 is easy. Just remove the glove box and then behind it there is 7 bolts. After you remove the 7 bolts then just remove the cover and behind it is the heater core. By far the easiest heater core I ever changed.
Remove the glove box and you'll have access to the heater core, still not easy.
The Heater Core will be located behind the dash. Hope that Helps.

Heater core will come out under the dash on the passenger side. it is possible to change the core without removing the heater housing. there was two different size cores as I remember but both will fit.
To change the heater core on a 1981 Ford F800, first disconnect the battery and drain the coolant from the radiator. Remove the dashboard and any necessary panels to access the heater box. Disconnect the hoses from the heater core, unbolt it from the heater box, and replace it with the new core. Reassemble everything in reverse order, refill the coolant, and check for leaks.
Drain the water from the cooling system. Remove the water hose from the heater core. Remove the heater core retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new heater core.
